Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site Tour

The name Dachau resonates with people from all over the world. The name is synonymous with the concentration camp system and is associated with the worst atrocities and brutal crimes carried out by the Nazi regime from 1933-45. Today, the site is a memorial to the estimated 41,500 victims who lost their lives there. Our tour has been developed to honour those victims and the survivors by telling their story.

1. Meet up at Marienplatz

Your guide will meet you at 9:00 in the world famous Marienplatz (St. Mary’s Square) in central Munich, where he will be holding a placard with ‘Dachau Memorial Tour’ on it in order to make it easy for you to locate him. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions about the tour or your stay in Munich at any time, and he will brief you on how your tour will work.

2. Travel to the Town of Dachau

Your guide will take care of your transportation tickets, and he will guide you through the Munich S-Bahn rail system for a 20-minute ride to Dachau, a small 9th-century town with a population of 42,000 people. At Dachau, you will take a short 10-minute bus ride following the route that the prisoners would have taken and finishing at the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site.

3. Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial

You will spend approximately 3 hours at the memorial site. Your guide will lead you throughout the whole site, stopping at certain stations to explain aspects of the camp and memorial with historical context. Because the tour can be alarming and thought-provoking, questions are encouraged.

The focus on the site is the plight of the victims and what they were subjected to, but we will also pay attention to the SS—the perpetrators of the crimes—and try to understand how they so willingly undertook their duties. Time will be given to explore the excellent museum exhibit so that you have the opportunity to explore for yourself as well. We have found that our tour guests appreciate this time as a way to reflect on the nature of what they are experiencing.

4. After the Tour

After the tour, you will be accompanied back to Marienplatz (unless you have your own arrangements). Not sure what to do next? Ask your guide for advice! We are happy to help you get the most out of your time.
